The Spirituality of Men

The Spirituality of Men a six-part series guiding men on a spiritual journey in a modern world. Our first step is understanding the differences between material and spiritual science.

People once considered that religions were obsolete and that material science would solve all human problems. Then they have become disillusioned with materialism and machinery and have realized that spiritual sciences are also indispensable for human welfare. - Dalai Lama

Spiritual Science Vs. Material Science

Primarily, the world today is dominated by societies with high intellect. Considered in such a trait is the ability of people to fully comprehend a concept based on scientific proof and logic. Without such things, a person can easily disregard theory and disprove its validity. And as soon as a person can test a concept with the use of scientific methods and experimentation, he can finally say that it is, in fact, a reality. However, such a method, makes it difficult for people to fully understand and believe in a thing called spiritual science.

A Thing Called Faith

Since the earlier days, it has been said that all of the achievements of us are in fact due to the power that we can achieve through our faith; and that such faith can encompass any material concept we ever dip our fingers into. Faith is what keeps us strong, resilient and powerful. However, with logic and proof limiting the human mind, it becomes more challenging for people to generally believe in such a thing as faith. With all of the principles that guide material science, it is difficult for us to give our trust in something that we cannot scientifically prove to be true. Furthermore, with the human mind being hindered by what can only be seen, we are then being taken aback by the fact that spiritual science truly exists.

Material Science

The value of material science, especially in today's world, cannot be argued upon. A lot of societies and nations depend on material science to carry their countries from “developing societies” focused on agriculture and manufacturing into advanced societies with advanced technological breakthroughs and inventions. The lives of people generally becoming easier as society progresses. Well, at least that’s the plan. Interestingly, as inventions and discoveries come along our “advanced thinking” would have us further disprove old beliefs and traditions stating these things are old ways and no longer have any value including spiritual science.

Spiritual Science

“The intellect is a cold thing and a merely intellectual idea will never stimulate thought in the same manner that a spiritual idea does.” – Ernest Holmes

However, spiritual science is much greater and infinite than material science. Material science can certainly help in people's everyday lives and generally make it easier for them; however, when someone dies, that is the end of it all. What is more, if something fails in the system of material science, it also suggests its end unless it is being replaced or repaired. But then, spiritual science governs people while they are alive and when they transition over. This Thing is sometimes called "soul, chi, energy, spirit” and it belongs to every living thing on the planet, certainly, spiritual science does exist, too. The only difference in all of it is the level of consciousness each living thing embodies. As we become more obsessed and blinded with material science, so do we alienate ourselves more from spiritual science.

Spiritual science is the conduit of all creation. Our role, when we are ready is to be still and listen to the small voice inside that nudges us to live fully. Some call this having faith. With faith as a foundation of all human beings, then we are certainly guided into the path of righteousness and supremacy.

Men today more than ever have feelings of disenchantment with the material world. Starting a spiritual practice is a sure-fire way of regaining a sense of purpose and getting back on track with your life.
